Schools around Australia are cracking down on students vaping by using new technology to catch out those breaking the rules.

Marymede College, in Melbourne's northeast, has installed "vape detectors" in student bathrooms and school principal Timothy Newcomb said "there are consequences" for students who are caught.

"The college community was concerned about the prevalence of vaping in society but certainly within our student population," Mr Newcomb told Today.

He said the school introduced the detectors in term one and since they were implemented, the rate of vaping among students has gone down.

"If a student was to be in the toilet block, for example, and they vaped, the vape detector would automatically send an email to a range of school leaders so that they can identify the exact time the vaping took place and in which exact toilet block," he said.

"We then cross-reference that time against our video footage of students of the camera just outside each toilet block to identify which students entered just prior to the vape detector going off."

Mr Newcomb said the school can then meet with students and work with them to identify exactly who it was vaping and then work with them to educate and help break the habit.

"There won't be one silver bullet to stop the issue of vaping. It will be a whole society issue, a whole community issue," he said.

"The educative piece is there, we do need to know if it's happening at school - We've got good supervision around the school grounds and we think this adds a really nice element to make sure that we can be confident about what's happening at school.

"We can't stop what happens outside of school but we can do our best and help educate the students to make good decisions."
