Police are investigating a shooting at Greenwood Park Mall that happened Sunday evening. The shooting occurred just as the mall was closing for the evening.

The police chief briefed the media following the shooting on Sunday.

"It appears that he had a rifle with several magazines of ammunition, entered the food court and began shooting," Ison said.

The "good Samaritan" who shot the man with the rifle was a 22-year-old man from Bartholomew County, Indiana, Ison said. He has not been identified publicly.

The Johnson County Coroner's Office said four people were fatally shot, including one woman and three men, including the shooter The woman was pronounced deceased at Eskenazi Hospital, one man died at St. Francis Hospital and two men were pronounced deceased at Greenwood Mall. Autopsies are pending and authorities have not identified the victims.

A 12-year-old girl also suffered a minor injury, though police did not elaborate on what type of injuries she suffered. The other victims ranged in age from early 20s to 30.

A bomb squad was called because an unattended backpack was found in the bathroom near the food court and was later cleared as being safe and unrelated to the incident. The FBI, ATF, Department of Homeland Security, and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department are assisting in the investigation.

Greenwood Mayor Mark W. Myers issued a statement Sunday night: "This tragedy hits at the core of our community. Please offer your prayers to the victims and our first responders."

Greenwood is a city of about 60,000 just south of Indianapolis in Johnson County.

The mass shooting was just the latest to hit America in 2022, including at schools, churches, and grocery stores. The latest was a July Fourth parade in Highland Park, Illinois.

Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit research group that tracks shootings and their characteristics in the United States, listed a dozen mass shootings that happened over the weekend alone.
